We finally got our garden in starting order…well, mostly my husband, but I helped in between this and that! Oh, don’t worry, when it comes time to do heavy weeding, picking and canning I’ll put my time in! For now my husband is the orchestrator, and a lot of that is to do with his planning of it all. He wants this there so it doesn’t cross, that there because the ground holds moisture better….it goes on and on and changes every year. I do have to say, though, it seems to impress more and more each year!!! One thing we did was invest in a good rototiller- that’s made all the difference in the world! Until this weekend I had never tried to use it, and all I knew was the grizzly bear we used before. When he suggested I run it the length of a row I was hesitant, but I really do want to have my stamp on it, too (hey, I tilled it…does it matter how much?). So there I went, and was quite surprised with the ease of handling. It was super easy guiding it toward him. I didn’t want to get any footprints in it, so I was straddling the row with a foot on either side, kinda sumo wrestler-ish, all the while him just staring at me kind of goofy. I got to him, proud as a peacock, and listened to his cracks about how that looked like some kind of crazy work out thing from my DVD’s…and I explained how beautiful my row looked without footpr-…ughh. He was already laughing at me when I looked back to see two tiny sets of footprints clearly following me down the whole length of the row!!! Oh, well. Now I know I can do it at least.
We bought most everything for our garden this year, the exception being some heirloom greenbeans (bush, stringless, indeterminate… I have plenty more if you want some…they’re wonderfully prolific) and some volunteer tomato plants from the compost bin (who knows what they’ll be but that’s the fun of it!). So, now it’s time to watch it all grow…then weed and weed and weed and weed.
Once again, my husband proves his genius and runs his seeds through a piece of pvc pipe to save his back…gotta love him!
